This recent radiator upgrade came via a personal recommendation from one of our existing customers. The client wanted to replace ageing radiators that were beginning to suffer from degraded performance and modernise the heating system throughout the property before winter.
A Wise Investment In A Pre-1900s Property
The existing radiators had been in place for many years and were no longer performing as they once had. Our customer wanted a reliable long-term upgrade that would improve heat output throughout the house and give every room a cleaner, more modern finish.
We chose Stelrad Halcyon radiators throughout the property, with each radiator backed by a 15-year manufacturer warranty. New thermostatic radiator valves were also installed on each radiator to provide improved individual room temperature control.
Although radiator replacement can sometimes appear straightforward, this particular project came with the sort of challenges often found in much older homes.
Project Overview
Not A Straightforward Radiator Swap
The old heating system featured rigid pipework and poor underfloor access, so much of the upgrading had to be carried out above floor level. That meant working carefully with the existing pipe runs while still achieving a neat finished installation.
Being a pre-1900s property also meant the walls had seen plenty of work over the years. Catching secure fixings into old lath and plaster added another layer of difficulty, but careful planning allowed us to complete the upgrade without unnecessary disruption.

Working Carefully In An Older Home
Older properties often require a very different approach to heating upgrades, especially when the original building fabric and pipework have been in place for decades.
Rigid Old Pipework
The existing heating pipework offered very little flexibility, so careful adaptation was required to connect modern radiator sizes cleanly.
Poor Underfloor Access
Limited access beneath the floors meant much of the upgrading had to be completed above floor level rather than relying on hidden alterations.
Lath & Plaster Walls
Securely fixing modern radiators to traditional lath and plaster requires patience and careful positioning to achieve a solid installation without unnecessary damage.
Year Warranty Per Radiator
The Stelrad Halcyon radiators installed on this project come with a 15-year manufacturer's warranty, giving the customer long-term peace of mind alongside improved heat output and a much cleaner finish throughout the property.
One Final New Radiator
This final radiator did not have a matching before photograph, so it is shown separately from the paired transformations above.
A Consistent Finish Throughout The Property
The additional installation follows the same specification as the rest of the property, giving the customer consistent radiator performance and a uniform finish across the heating system.
A Day And A Half Well Spent
This was a good day and a half of work for us, with plenty of small challenges along the way, but the end result was exactly what the customer wanted. The house now has brand-new radiators throughout, improved thermostatic control and significantly better heating performance ready for winter.
For an older property where the radiators had begun to degrade in both appearance and performance, this really was a wise investment.
