Replacing a 49-Year-Old Vulcan Continental Boiler with a Modern Combi System
Some jobs really show just how far heating technology has come — and this was one of them.
We were called in by new homeowners who had just taken ownership of a property still running on its original heating system, installed nearly 49 years ago. At the heart of it was a Vulcan Continental floor-standing boiler, complete with a hot water cylinder, tanks, original pipework, and radiators fitted with old-style dual valves.
While impressive in terms of longevity, the system was extremely inefficient, outdated, and no longer suitable for modern living.
The Existing System
The original setup included:
- A Vulcan Continental floor-standing boiler (approximately 49 years old)
- Hot water cylinder and cold water storage tanks
- Original radiators throughout the property
- Old dual radiator valves
- Pipework dating back to the original installation
With the homeowners planning a full kitchen and utility room overhaul, it made sense to remove the old system entirely and replace it with something efficient, reliable, and future-proof.
Full System Removal
We carried out a complete strip-out of the existing heating system, including:
- Removal of the old boiler
- Removal of the hot water cylinder and tanks
- Removal of all existing radiators
- Removal of redundant pipework
This cleared the space and allowed the homeowners to move forward with their renovation plans without any restrictions from the old heating layout.
The New Heating System
We installed a modern, high-efficiency system designed to suit the property and the homeowners’ needs:
- Worcester Bosch 8000+ 32C combi boiler
- 10 new Stelrad Softline radiators fitted throughout the property
- New thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
- Partial system re-pipe where required
- Hive Smart Control for easy, efficient heating control
- System filter to protect the new boiler and radiators
- 12-year manufacturer guarantee for long-term peace of mind
The move to a combi boiler means instant hot water on demand, no need for stored hot water, and a significant improvement in efficiency and running costs.
Ready for Renovation
With the new boiler installed and the heating system fully modernised, the homeowners can now proceed with their kitchen and utility room refurbishment, knowing the heating system is reliable, efficient, and built to last.
